“healthcare is essential”

PROJECT: nundu HOSPITAL

Nundu Hospital Partnership

Nundu Hospital is the only medical facility serving the local community, providing healthcare for Cori-anna College children, the Malaika Mumma’s program, and others in need. Despite its vital role, the hospital operates with limited space, supplies, and aging equipment.

We are working to address one urgent need: proper hospital beds and mattresses. The current shortage forces patients to use worn-out mattresses or makeshift arrangements, impacting their comfort and recovery.

By supplying quality beds and mattresses, we aim to improve patient care and support the hardworking hospital staff. Join us in this initiative to make a meaningful impact on the health and well-being of the community.

NUNDU DEACONESS HOSPITAL is the general referral hospital for Nundu Rural Health Zone (District), located on the west side of the Lake Tanganyika, in South Kivu Province in DRC, it is a more than 110 beds hospital providing secondary level care for the Nundu Health District population. The NDH is serving a population of 255 760 among them 28200 Burundi refugees in the Lusenda Site Camp.

It accounts in general a staff of 60 people; 4 general practitioner doctors, 34 Nurses, and different other technicians and administrative staffs. The hospital has four main services Maternity, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics and a newly developed department eye and Neonatal unit department.

The hospital has no specialist, no surgeon but some general surgery interventions on hernia, appendicitis, etc. are performed by general practitioner doctors. Specialized interventions are referred to Bukavu at Panzi Hospital (Peace Nobel Prize hospital) more than 174km (roads in this area like many places in Congo is in terrible condition). The NDH is serving underserved populations, which have survived repetitive episodes of instability and unrest; Raising Dignity and ABCD asbl had taken seriously this situation and trust that a young girl even if she got early pregnant she still deserves a second chance, she needs education and healthcare with dignity like all the human being.

We decided to call them Malaika mama and their children Malaika watoto from the Swahili of Angels.

Dr Lwab Marx

Medical care for our Malaika Mamas, their Wototos and the children of Cori-Anna College is provided by Dr Lwab Marx, a doctor based in Nundu hospital and supported by the Wesleyan Methodist Churches in the USA. Dr Marx and a team of carers know as the ABCD team are working together to help provide health checks and education to the Cori-Anna College community. The Mamas have benefitted greatly from being together and work cohesively to support each other as they care for their little Wototo’s and rebuild their lives
